Brandt's Summary.

Brandt's article "The Ambiguity of Writing" focuses on describing the differences between writing and reading. She includes different people's experiences and memories of their early childhood. All of these people come from different backgrounds and their ages range from 10 to 96 years old. Despite all these differences these people posses they all came to the same conclusion that reading and writing are influential. According to Brandt, reading is more of an activity of pleasure that becomes a daily routine and is usually done in groups. For example, Brandt provides the story of a man named Roderick Ames who had a grandmother who would often read the bible to him and his family. This example greatly supports Brandt's definition of reading. Compared to reading, writing came to be out of loneliness or a rebellious circumstance in somebodies life. To support her definition, Brandt provides and example of a women who recalls her first writing experience occurring when she was four and she felt abandoned in a hospital bed. In conclusion, Brandt's article was to help teachers develop a more conscious way of teaching in an English classroom. She also briefly summarizes how literacy has changed over time.
