Hi guys,
I'm sorry I'm not in class today, as well as for the abruptly canceled class last Thursday. Even though I can't be in today I'd like you guys to move forward, so today you be working on a couple of things. First, I'd like you guys to complete a summary of Brant's article 'Remembering Reading, Remembering Writing.' I'd like you guys to work on this summary collaboratively; that means that you'll have to discuss your understanding of Brandt with each other, come to some agreement about what her thesis is, her supporting or main points are, what her purpose is, etc. Then together, you will create your summary. After you have completed your collaborative summary and posted it up on the blog (just 1 of you guys needs to post it) I'd like you guys to begin working on our second cold reading. Jordan and Josh will be thereto help you through this (although the cold reading must be done on your own.).
Summarizin'
So I'd like you guys to work together to create a summary of Brandt's 'Remembering Reading, Remembering Writing' article. This summary is due in class today. Once complete, one of you (Edgar or Isaac) will post the summary up on the Blog.
- You'll have to first, sit down with each other and brain storm. Take notes and compare your understanding of Brandt. Utilize our 'CLASS NOTES' as well.
- Before you begin creating your summary together I'd like you guys to first:
- -Identify Brandt's purpose in writing. Why is she writing? Why is it important? And for who?
- Compare your understanding of her purpose. Do they differ? Why?
- -Return to Brant's article and locate her Thesis, that is, look for the statement(s) in Brant's article in which she writes about what her purpose in writing is.
- Does your understanding of her purpose match up with her thesis statement(s)? If not, might you be focusing on one of her minor points as her purpose or main point. Be will to re-adjust here, if you find, you've latched onto one of her minor points.
- Next identify major points that support Brant's thesis, what ideas/concepts/points does she use to support her purpose in writing? Go back to our CLASS Notes and read over Brandt to locate the points that support her thesis! Compare your points to each other, discuss their relevancy, and how these points are connected to each other.
Now youre ready to begin writing!
- Begin by naming the writer, article title and main idea.
- The bulk of your summary should be in your own words.
- After you've introduced Brant's Thesis, or purpose in writing, a break down of her supporting (or main ideas) should follow.
- End by discussing the significance of Brant's article (But here's where it gets tricky!) Do not discuss the significance of the article from your point of view, but instead, from Brant's point of view. Think about who her audience is and what her purpose was in writing. How is this significant for them?
- When you're done, read over your Summary together. Is there anything missing? Has anything gone unexplained? Did you write it in your own words? Are there any opinions in your summary? Statements from your point of view, that don't belong in the summary? Revise your summary and submit it online by posting it to our class blog!
Now you need to complete our second Cold Reading! Read through it, and, as with our first cold reading, post your answers up on the blog.
